Quilted Backgrounds

During Play Date, we learned how to create a beautiful quilted background for our layouts.

Here are the basic steps for a 12x12 background:

  1. Cut a 12x12 piece of cardstock into 3x3 squares.

  2. Adhere ½” patterned paper strips diagonally to cover each square, trimming off any excess.

  3. Arrange squares on a 12x12 background, moving them around until you find an arrangement that is pleasing to you.

  4. Adhere squares and your background is ready for your photos & story!

The Play Date session each month is a time for us to gather virtually with other community members and work on anything we want. While many of us followed along with member, Marianne Durr and tried the quilted background during this session, some members worked on other layouts or just listened in to the conversation.
 

Other FUN Ideas πŸ’‘ Shared

  • Create some squares with light colors and others with dark colors to achieve different quilted looks or use all black and white patterns to create a background for vintage photos.

  • Instead of patterned paper, use Washi tape to create the quilted background blocks.

  • Use Washi tape to hold a small background square on top of a mat with diagonal lines to help with placement of paper strips.

  • As a quick shortcut to creating individual quilted blocks, cut striped patterned papers into squares and reassemble for a quilted pattern!

  • Use extra squares to create cards. Add a sentiment and you’re done!

Marianne Durr has created quite a few quilted background layouts after first attempting this technique just last month!

Her examples show the variety of designs that can be constructed using a variety of quilted blocks. Thanks for sharing your expertise with this FUN technique Marianne!

Marianne lives in Northern Utah, in a little valley surrounded by mountains, with her husband of 19 years and their three children, ages 9, 6Β½, and 8 months. She enjoys photography, crafting, and brainstorming. She is a people person who loves to talk to anyone and admits to β€œthinking sporadically.”

Vanette Tolman lives in Clovis, California, and is currently working in 9 x 12 pocket scrapbooks. She enjoys biking, gardening, boating, swimming at the lake, and (of course) playing with her 10 grandkids, ages 17 to 1.

Vanette created her squares using the Simple Stories Sun Kissed Collection, fussy cut a title, added her photo, and even stitched on her layout during Play Date. Later she added a pocket page with additional photos & matching quilted blocks. Her photos are absolutely priceless: Vanette and her grandkids created an entire beach scene with sidewalk chalk, then staged FUN photos!
 

🧑 Play Date = FUN Discussion

Most of the discussion in this session revolved around scrapbooking, but (as is often the case when women gather to craft together) there were meanderings into other topics.

I was reminded that hoodoos are tall, thin spires of rock formed by erosion and weathering and learned that there are some good Korean Dramas on Netflix (including the one Stacy & her family are currently watching, Mr. Sunshine) if you don’t mind reading sub-titles.

A NOTE from 🧑 Stacy …

Each month on our calendar, you’ll find 4 (optional) things to do. Some of these Four FUN ideas will be directly related to storytelling, others to just being present with life and choosing to have more FUN. In July, I invited you to β€œtranscribe something” and that is just what I did on this page. I transcribed (or typed) a letter that my father wrote to my mother preceding my birth.

It’s easy to look at ALL the memorabiliaβ€”ie. letters, documents and more in our possession as one BIG overwhelming task that must wait until we have time. But you could also choose to locate, transcribe and use just one treasure like this anytime in the midst of your right now!
