Watercoloring 🎨

July is World Watercolor Month, so we spent time watercoloring together during Do It Together. Stacy worked on polka dots for a scrapbook page background while LYS members watercolored backgrounds, stamped images, resist papers, workbook pages, and sketched images.
 

Supplies & Ideas for Watercoloring

A set of watercolors (or watercolor pencils), a paintbrush, water, and something to paint on are all that’s needed to enjoy this FUN hobby.

  • A water brush has a paintbrush tip and a barrel that holds water. These brushes are perfect if you don’t want to have an open cup of water on your table and they are great for travel too. There are even watercoloring brush pen sets with the ink color already in the pen.

  • Watercolor resist papers have designs or words in a special resist coating that will repel the watercolor and leave a white or metallic design/message.

  • Water-based inks can be used in the place of watercolors. With the ink pad closed, squeeze the lid into the pad to get some ink on the lid, then open and dip your brush in the ink & watercolor away.

  • Stamp an image using a permanent or archival ink to ensure the ink won’t bleed when you watercolor the image.

  • Try a workbook by Emily Lex. These delightful watercolor workbooks include examples, instructions, and sketches ready for you to paint directly in the workbook.
 

Watercoloring 🧑 Examples


Sonja Gortzak-Hughes had actually watercolored earlier in the day. She brought her Stampin’ Up! Watercolor pencils, a water brush and some card stock to her son’s Go-Karting day and spent time switching and blending. Since it was after midnight her time, she mostly just listened in.

Sonja is Dutch but lives near Bristol, England, with her English husband and their 13-year-old son. She’s a Class Teacher in the very picturesque Cotswolds and enjoys going on walks with family, visiting small town markets, scrapbooking, card making, and creating pretty snail-mail letters. She’s followed Stacy for many years and loves her approach to scrapbooking and life: Keep it simple, be good to people and enjoy what you’re doing.

Lorna Schreck is retired and lives in Woodbury, Minnesota (after 55 years in California). She loves to chat and enjoys a wide variety of creative, crafty, art & paper projects. She writes stories and adds photos or images to put in her People, Places or Things albums. Lorna admits that after being a helper most of her life, she is now learning how to receive help with grace and gratitude and says if she’d had a daughter, she would have loved for her to be just like Stacy.


In 2000, Lorna took up watercolor to de-stress after colon cancer and became a Certified Instructor in 2005. She was not able to paint during our session, but she visited and shared lots of tips and encouragement. Five Watercolor Tips 🧑 From Lorna

1. Think back to being 5 and the joy of coloring and painting. Play, explore and have fun as if you are that 5-year-old.

2. Gather supplies and some inspiration for your painting space and start with what you have.

3. Set an intention for the time you have set aside: turn off your phone, listen to music, and honor the time you are giving yourself. Watercoloring is like recess for adults.

4. The process of painting is a journey, so keep moving and breathing and smiling as you spend time on your creative journey. IT IS ALL GOOD.
