Note from Stacy: I still need to add handwritten and typed journaling to my extended story, but I love how the tearing technique (with touches of Washi tape ties these layers together, visually. I’m so grateful for the chance to gather and work collectivelyβ€”and to see your ideas and adaptations! Plus, I now have one more story told!

Tearing it up!

During our time together Stacy demonstrated this super fun technique of layering torn paper to create a background and even a floral embellishment for her most recent layout. She showed us how she was able to use water to help create a pattern for easier tearing and control of the shapes she was hoping to achieve.

This can be done with either a water pen or a q-tip dipped in water. As you paint your pattern onto the the paper it soaks in and loses the paper fibers so that when you go to do the tearing it can be don’t smoothly as it follows the path you have created with the water.

Some other quick tips shared:

  • Use a white core papers which automatically creates a white outline to you designs.

  • Use a paper that has two different tones of the same color on opposite sides which allows you to layer opposite but complimentary designs in the background of a layout creating some beautiful depth.

  • LYS Member Carla Sylvester shared a framing technique where you cut an X in the middle of a rectangle and peel/roll back the resulting triangles to create a rustic frame.
