Here’s the foreward to the book:

I was privileged to tell this true story as part of an annual concert of The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square. Along with those who attended the live presentation, I’m grateful it will continue to be shared on television and streaming services for many years to come. Even though it is about events that took place just before World War II, the theme and circumstances of the story are not unfamiliar. It is an account of refugee families, driven from their homes in search of safety for themselves and a future for their children. Indeed it is a story for our time.
So often, religious beliefs, cultural backgrounds, historical traditions, and so forth, are excuses to divide ourselves from one another. But, like light itself, God’s loves shines on all people, everywhere. And when we share that light by serving othersβ€”including with those who are different from usβ€”the light of goodness has an infinite reach and influence.
In the concert, as I finished telling the story, I invited everyone who wanted to share light through service to turn on the lights of their phones, β€œHold them up high,” I said. It was a profoundly moving sight. Of course, it was impressive to see 15,000 people all doing the same thing at the same time. But what inspired me most was that by holding up our lights together, as one, the darkness disappeared. We were all bathed in light.
Which is to say, wherever we come from, whatever our faith as we work together to serve each other, the darkness of prejudice, hate, and fear will disappear. And that makes this a story about more than several hundred people doing good eighty years ago. It’s also a story about each of us here and now, if we want it to be.
