Story This!

Have you ever looked at a photograph that took you right back to a specific moment in time and allowed you to relive the memories associated with the people, place and things in the image? Did you also remember other things not depicted in the photoβ€”perhaps conversations, personality traits of individuals, aromas, sounds, etc?

During Do It Together, Stacy encouraged us to think of our brains as being the attic of our memories. Inside the attic, there are boxes stacked all around and in the corners. Sometimes things will get bumped or shaken and the boxes will fall over and little things will fall out.

This is what’s happening when we see an image (the box is shaken) and remember details (the little things falling out). The box can also be β€œshaken” by places, feelings, sounds, smells, and things.

Story This! process

We spent this session participating in a collective activity that involved images and their unique-to-us associated memories. We went through several rounds of this process.

  1. First, Stacy shared an image (or a sound).

  2. Then we each wrote down the first memory that came to mind associated with that image.

  3. We took a minute or two to record other details and memories that surfaced based on the image or the first memory.

  4. We finished each round with a few participants sharing their memories related to the image.

For example, the image of a telephone immediately brought to my (Melissa’s) mind β€œDaddy” because my Daddy began working for the telephone company before I was born and retired 40 years later! I remembered how he always installed a telephone jack in practically every room when we moved into a new house, so we didn’t have as much of a need for the long cords that many other members remember pulling into another room to have a private conversation. I still have one of those old black telephones, which I’ve most recently used in a display for a retreat I wrote & led entitled β€œGod Is Calling You” … because, of course, telephones are a huge part of my life story.

As you can see from this example, one image can lead to memories of people (Daddy), places (homes) and things (phone jacks, retreat)! The Story This! process is an activity designed to help us access our personal stories.

Share your story in the Facebook group, in a text or email to friends/family, on a scrapbook layout (perhaps in an Extended Story format), or in a your personal story journal.

A Note from Stacy

LOOK and SEE if you can find black & white in your surroundings this month. It might surprise you how often this combination of polar opposites shows up in our world. I was inspired by member, Lorna during this session to go on an intentional hunt in and around our home and once I initiated that search in my brain, I was amazed.

Remember that you might take a photo for one particular reason, but you might alsoβ€”days or months laterβ€”appreciate and use it for an entirely different reason. The pictures you take today may spark memories full of personal meaning in years to come!

It behooves as as storytellers to constantly be on the look out for ways to enrich our digital libraries.
