Creative Growth
 

LYS Member, Lisa, recently emailed Stacy with the following concern and it sparked a wonderful Story Coaching session FULL of ideas about growth and the path we take when discovering what brings us fulfillment and joy - within scrapbooking or anything creative.

Lisa said: I wanted to share my biggest struggle when it comes to documenting that maybe you can help me out with - design. I absolutely freeze when it comes to what my documentation will look like and it is my biggest stumbling block!

Stacy used Lisa’s dilemma to share the important stages in creative growth as well as basic design principles that can help - specifically for digital scrapbooking - and other LYS members shared what tips and tools have worked for them.

Creative Growth & the Creative Growth Curve πŸ“ˆ

Stacy first learned about the Creative Growth Curve from Todd Henry and has since shared about the process on her podcast as well as during our story coaching session.

  • The first phase is discovery and curiosity, or the beginners mind .

  • The second phase is imitation or emulation, to foster learning.

  • The third phase is divergence and the confidence, where teaching and sharing what you have learned with will foster further growth.

  • And finally crisis, which is when we plateau or feel stuck and it is often the catalyst for beginning a whole new growth curve.

As we used this outline to approach Lisa’s stumbling block, LYS Community Members shared where they are in their Creative Growth Curve and what has helped in each step of growth. Many were in the imitation or emulation phase (it’s perfectly ok to hang out here for for a while!) and great resources for digital layouts were shared:

Also helpful, is Photoshop Elements as well as Pages (MAC) and Word (PC). Pages and Word are fairly intuitive and you can create simple documents and add space for photos.

I’m so grateful for Lisa and her willingness to share her question with me. I really enjoy and learn from our conversations when we are eager to support each other in this awesome community.

Lisa is primarily interested in pursuing digital scrapbooking using the Project Life app. When you recognize your preferred approach/application and go-to tools, then you can look for examples of others’ work in this area. As you practice seeing and evaluating basic design principles, like emphasis, contrast and repetition at work you will begin to see how other people (often intuitively) design the way they do AND you’ll learn WHY a page looks good. This skill is HUGE when it comes to emulating with intention and practicing principles that do in fact matter!

The next time you’re scrolling for β€œinspiration” pause to evaluate what you like so you can articulate what it isβ€”I promise it’s not just someone else’s beautiful photos or the super-cool product they use. It’s principles of good design at work!
