Do It Together

Tuesday, at Do it Together Stacy led us in writing prompt practice πŸ“ This month, the prompt is all about describing peopleβ€”the whole focus of our stories!

To kick us off, Stacy shared her own list of descriptive words used to paint a picture of Grandpa Briggs, her father (see image below.) Then after a quick practice, members shared their people and their wordsβ€”it was so inspiring!

From Stacy: Towards the end of our session I started putting together a scrapbook page that I think will likely become the 12x12 foundation for an Extended Story about my Dad. I compiled a list of 25 words from those sent to me in our family group textβ€”I think I want to do some rearranging and some additional writing, as many of these words spark and need storiesβ€”or at least a bit more explanation, but I’m excited to continue this creative process!

 

In addition to some fantastic examples of using words to bring your memories of loved ones to life, we enjoyed suggestions from both Karen and Katie. Karen reminded us not to shy away from emotion words. Writing is a vulnerable practice and when we’re willing to truly describe what we feel, then it will be very satisfying and more meaningful. Katie noted that after making your list of descriptive words, our minds will take us to the context of those words and how they relate to our relationship with this loved person. Don’t be afraid, she said, to add that context! This can lead to both stories and additional fond memories you may want to look back on.
