Categories, Curating & Keywords

We had a super valuable Story Coaching session this month as Stacy revisited the use of keywords for curating and categorizing the photos in our libraries. Taking the time to practice this skill allows us an easier way to recall photos when looking for the ones we want to use in our story telling.

Keywords are simply words that are used to describe the elements of your photo or image. These are universally used by professional photographers and stock photography for ease of recall when searching a library. We can also use this feature in our own personal photo libraries and Stacy is wonderful at coaching us, as our needs and uses of keywords evolve.

Keywords are a solution to too many albums in your digital library.

Five best practices when using the keyword feature in our photo libraries:

  1. Limit your keywords.

  2. Organize your keywords into 4 general categories: Us, People, Places & Things.

  3. Use a prefix: This helps you determine which keywords are YOUR keywords and not ones already in the metadata of a photo you have imported.

  4. Keep your keywords list tidy: Regularly take some time to go through your list of keywords and get rid of the ones that aren’t yours or ones that aren’t serving a purpose.

  5. Start with broader categories and get more specific with your keywords over time and as you get more comfortable with them.

Stacy taught us some helpful shortcuts like Command-I which allows you to quickly pull up a selected photo’s information panel and Command-K opens your keyword manager allowing easy access when reviewing and editing your keywords.

She also took a quick moment to demonstrate how to use the smart albums feature in iPhoto and how this can be another efficient option for curating your photos for specific stories.

We squeezed in a TON of wonderful information into our hour together. You will absolutely want to visit the replay on YouTube and see what you can use in your photo organization efforts.

 

Follow Up with Stacy

TAG ICON QUESTION: When you assign keyword to an image in Apple Photos, a small tag-shaped icon appears in the upper right corner. Towards the end of our session, Beth asked a question about this tag/keyword indicatorβ€”wondering why she wasn’t seeing it on her images after applying keywords.

I’ve looked into this and cannot find an answer at all. My guess is that the icon is added as the keyword is indexed (synced with iCloud) and the speed of this process is dependent on the processing and/or connection strength in the moment.
