Interacting with Photos
 

We enjoyed a remarkable Story Coaching on Tuesday evening. I invited members to come prepared to share an older album to see and share what interacting with the photos inside felt like and could teach us.

I’m so grateful to: Melissa, Donna, Joanne, Rebecca, Veronica, Lorna and Maree for their willingness to share.

We were reminded in a powerful way how much what we do mattersβ€”it matters as a way of preserving photos and memories for sure, but it matters in so many other ways. When you revisit a completed scrapbook you not only remember the documented topic, but you get to visit with an earlier version of yourselfβ€”the woman who selected those photos and added those words and decorative elements.

Looking back we realize that we were more intuitive and creative that we sometimes NOW give ourselves credit forβ€”ANDβ€”even though we could see and/or hear each other in only a virtual way, as each person opened up and let us in, we felt the gratitude, admiration and connection grow β€œin the room!”

Here are two highlights from our time together …
 

While Lorna was looking for the scrapbook of photos she intended to share, she stumbled across a small autograph book which we flipped through together. She taught us so much about this simple, but meaningful collection of yes, autographs, but also personal favorites and notes from teachers and a very dear friend, who would unexpectedly pass away a short time into the future.

 

Maree was the last to share on Tuesday evening and it’s probably a good thing she waited, because as she allowed us to interact with her photosβ€”and her efforts to bring them together for her son (who is living with a severe disability) she touched our hearts in a profound way.

In her own words …

I chose a β€˜Remember…’ Album to prompt my son to focus on and remember the good things in his life and his achievements and abilities. Many of the quotes have a double meaning and pertain to a comment or conversation we had at that time in his life the photo was taken.

Maree commented in her email to me that she deeply appreciated the support she felt from those gathered and that she was surprised by how much she shared as that is not her usual way. It was abundantly clear that this scrapbook, which her son looks at frequently, was and continues to be a healing balmβ€”even as the struggles for her son’s well being continue to be extremely heavy.

Maree, I speak for all present to say Thank YOU for your bravery and generosity.

So far, I’ve been caught watching TV with hubs and Addie, talking to Chase on the phone, reading my scriptures and putting cookies into the oven. My alarm went off during this session, so I snapped a photo of that too!

LISTEN UP: Photos taken in response to this challenge will be the kind of everyday life images you wouldn’t normally think to take AND yet there is so much that can be captured in them. It’s definitely NOT too late to give this challenge a try. In fact … Sunday is July 23rd β€”orβ€” 7/23/23
