Persnickety Box & Digital Workflow

One important component of a digital workflow is the print process. During Do It Together, Stacy shared how she’s using Persnickety Box to curate collections of photos of major life events as part of her goal to create a print archive of these photos. The ideas she shared can be implemented and added to any print process, regardless of where or how you print photos.

Persnickety Box is a subscription service that allows users (currently only in the US) to swipe photos into a β€œbox” in the Persnickety Box App (available for iOS & Android). Each box contains thirty 4”x4” photos and is printed and shipped once the box is β€œclosed” in the app.

Stacy demonstrated swiping photos into a box as well as how she uses the Project Life app to create square photo collages, add text, and include journaling on images. These images can then be exported to the phone’s camera roll for printing, sharing, or swiping into a Persnickety Box.
 

Ideas πŸ’‘ for Curating Collections of Photos

  1. Set up Albums in your photo management software to curate collections of your photos for projects.

  2. Stacy is currently working on curating yearly highlights albums/Persnickety Boxes. This means choosing her favorite 30 (only 30!) images from an entire year. She’s working in small chunks of time and reminded us that this is not something that will be completed quickly. It’s a project that will take time, so let go of the expectation for speed & enjoy the process.

  3. A new box opens each month (that you have a subscription) in Persnickety Box, so you can work on curating multiple collections at a time. The box does not have to be printed each month. While Stacy shared several boxes she’s already had printed, she also has numerous open boxes in the app that she is working on.

  4. Photo/Story collections discussed in this session included:
    +Child’s birth story & 1st year
    +Mission Trips (Stacy is creating a box for each of her boy’s 2-year mission.)
    +Monthly, Seasonal, or Yearly highlights
    +Wedding
    +COVID (a major life event we’ve all experienced recently)

  5. While Stacy is curating photos to keep as a print archive, Persnickety Box can be used to print photos for scrapbook layouts, pocket pages, photo albums, displays, gifts, etc. They are beautiful, high-quality prints.
 

LYS Member 🧑 Examples

Karen Stockham signed up for Persnickety Box when it was first released to collect and print photos for special events and specific topics. She has a box for toys from her childhood and one for pictures of Donny Osmond, her teen crush (ok, she still has a crush!), and finally printed her wedding photos from 1990. Karen says, β€œI love that there is no pressure to get the box filled in the month. I can open several and collect over time. So my tip is to enjoy and not get overwhelmed!”

Karen and her husband John live in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and are new empty nesters. She loves being a mom and now Grandma! She is a licensed professional clinical counselor and a docent at the Albuquerque Zoo. She uses memory keeping to tell stories over time and emphasize the moments she loves the most. She first met Stacy in the early 2000s and taught classes for her at BPC. Karen sees herself as a β€œhealthy Stacy stalker!”

Sarah Bucek lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and enjoys scrapbooking, cardmaking, knitting and crocheting. She’s been scrapbooking 20+ years and has known Stacy since the Simple Scrapbooks magazine days. Stacy’s simple style and message that every photo doesn’t need to be scrapbooked really resonated with Sarah. She is a longtime volunteer with She Loves Color and was thrilled to finally get the opportunity to meet Stacy in person in 2020 until Covid forced the event to be held virtually.

Sarah began using Persnickety Box last November with the purpose of printing 30 photos per year of her childhood. She is scanning and editing the photos, which her mom had scotch-taped into albums, and using them to scrapbook her childhood memories. Many of the photos are 3”x3” and she was surprised how much larger the 4”x4” prints seem compared to the originals. Sarah says, β€œDon’t panic to fill your box before the end of the month. Your box will wait until you are ready.”

  2. Search August 19th on your smart phone and find 1,2 or more photos that you could share, print or use to illustrate a story!

  3. Scan an older photograph(s) and add them to your digital library with as many details as you know.
