Holiday Album Ideas
 

This Story Coaching session was bursting with ideas for ways to make a holiday specific album and how to go about organizing the process to easily incorporate highlights without getting overwhelmed with the many, many things that take place daily during this time of year.

Melissa sent in a wonderful question, about beginning an album specifically for holiday happenings. She wanted something that would begin right after Thanksgiving, so it could include Thanksgiving and tree trimming. Daily photos and journaling seemed overwhelming so she was looking for suggestions and ways to organize entries in preparation, to allow for quick and easy layouts, without having to complete a page every day.

So, so many wonderful suggestions were shared and the inspiration flowed…

Stacy shared a Penny for Your Thoughts project she created with CKMedia several years ago. Misty had asked about this, so she walked us through what she had done so far.

Joelle shared a 12 Days of Christmas album she has done that highlighted 12 special traditions of the holiday season. Most of her pages feature photos from a variety of years and places, which enriches the story and lowers the expectation!

Alissa shared that she has an album set up with 10 different favorite traditionsβ€”she makes sure to get pictures of each year. Once they are added to her album it beautifully and simply shows growth and change in loved ones, while also capturing the tradition, and specific highlights that are revisited each season.

Ann share an idea of doing the ABCs of Christmas. For example: A for Advent, B for Bright, C for Cookies etc. Love this!

Cindi shared a flip display by Tim Holtz that would be great to use during different holidays. By creating different sets for each holiday it would be something fun to switch out with each changing season.

Katie shared the idea of going back to previous journaling and stories from past Christmases, to find the events that have since become traditions. Begin recording the details and special feelings that have come from it becoming a tradition.

Digital Markers and Workflow
 

Also during our call, LYS Member Alissa Williams shared a ✨brilliant ✨ idea to help with digital photo workflow and photo managementβ€”right on your device!

Here are the steps to the process she shared:

  1. Create three markers: trash can, heart, composition notebook

  2. Date the trash can, heart, and notebook markers with the last day of the month.

  3. DELETING. At the end of the month, go through the month’s photos and delete photos you don’t need.

  4. When finished deleting, delete the trash can photo to signify you have finished deleting for the month.

  5. FAVORITING. At the end of the month, go through the month’s photos and heart photos you love.

  6. 6. When finished deleting, delete the heart marker to signify you have finished favoriting photos for the month.

  7. JOURNALING. At the end of the month, go through the month’s photos and add key events/journaling to monthly marker or on photos.

  8. When finished adding in journaling, delete the notebook maker to signify you have finished adding in the key events/journaling snippets for the month.

I’ve just completed my sixth writing session with Geoff’s father, Gary Julian. If you haven’t heard, we are helping him compile 400 pages of ancestral and personal historyβ€”and it is quite an undertaking.

But, here’s what I know for sure: It matters and there would be no book to compile if he hadn’t be so faithful in documenting this life. The research he has done and the details and stories he has recorded will indeed be valued by my children.
