Seasonal Project:
Gift Album & Photo Book Sharing!

Things are wrapping up for 2023 and we had our final Project Play Date session of the Season and the YEAR! This is the time we share what we have been working on and this season was a Gift Album or Photo Book to give away 🎁

JoAnne was first to share. She had never ever done a computer or digital based project and was very happy to find success through a new medium of scrapbooking. For her photo book she was able to complete an entire album to gift to her Nephew using Persnickety Prints and their layout template. The template she chose allowed her to simply select all of the digital photos she wanted to include and populate the place holders chronologically, which she was able to adjust if she chose to. The layout also included various text boxes for her to include journaling!

She was able to complete this project on-the-go using her phone and computer and said it only took her about 3 hours from start to finish. It took longer to receive her printed copy β€” about 2 weeks β€” but it was well worth it and she is eager to do more!

Carla shared her project which was an addendum to a gift album she made for her mom a couple year ago. The traditional 8x8 album she did before didn’t have any journalling so she decided to add all the stories and journaling this year. She did this by creating 8x8 pages of text that can easily be inserted between the pages they correspond with. This was a labor of love, and sure to be cherished by her mom. Also it is a wonderful reminder that we can always revisit albums and projects, write from our current perspective to include the journaling that we maybe didn’t’ have the time to include initially.

Stacy then shared her completed Sprinkles Vol 1 album which is a 6x6 photo book she created with Project Life and printed it with Chatbooks.

Stacy had some credit on her account, which was a bit of a discount, but even with expedited shipping, her books were just $25 each. She ordered 5 copiesβ€”one for each of her children. Her 30 page album is comprised of a variety of pagesβ€”stories and favorites, quotes and recipes and as you might guess, a whole section on color!

In my little gift album I included my favorite short story, The Appointment in Samara, by Somerset Maugham. This story was introduced to me by my 7th grade Language Arts teacher, Mr. Irby.

Earlier this month, I followed a Light the World prompt to β€œThank a teacher β€” before noon β€” today” Because I was working on this gift album, I immediately thought of Mr. Irby, but how does one reach out to a teacher who taught you in 1977? I didn’t know, but I decided to email the current principal at Kenmore Jr. High where I went to school. He thanked me for my interest in Mr. Irby, who he had never heard of and he forwarded by request to an office manager who has worked at the school the longest. She also replied that she didn’t have any idea how to reach Mr. Irby all these years later. She said she would forward my email to one more person, the assistant principal, Jennifer Hernandez.

I forgot all about my request, until a week later when I received this email …

Good morning, Stacy.

Jennifer Hernandez forwarded your message to me yesterday and it instantly buoyed my spirits and widened my grin. Just knowing that I had a positive impact on a young girl's schooling experience makes those 30 years of long hours and low pay very much worth it. 

I often wonder at what became of my kids over the years. What careers did they pursue? Did they marry and have kids of their very own? The messages have dribbled in over the years, some twenty years since I retired to Tucson, Arizona, and fifty years since I graduated from the UW and came to Kenmore as a rookie teacher.

As for me, I'm 82 now, slow of step, but still a reader and writer, and mischief whenever possible. My wife, Nori, looks after me, scolds my faults and keeps me in line. I try to walk two miles each morning, tend my tiny flower garden, always a fresh book nearby, nap some, watch British TV some, and so make it through another day, and another day. In those intervening years I've had two novels published and I've self-published three collections of poetry, mostly just observations of human behavior and my thoughts on such.

It means the world to me that you reached out. So very much appreciated. I'll paste in one of my most recent poems below, penned just a week or so ago. I hope all is well with you, and all those you love and care for. Stay strong. Our troubled world desperately needs ever so much more of you.  With so many fond memories.

We are influenced by countless people that may not know how grateful you are. I’m so tickled that my little scrapbook sparked this idea for me and that I now have another reason to make a scrapbook page!
