Summer Story Starter Series

It was so wonderful to see so many your happy faces after the time adjustment. We are glad that several were still able to join us!

This month we began PART 2 of the Story Starter series for our Project Playdate, where we are remembering and documenting sensory details to create three separate stories about a person (July), a place (August) and a thing (September).

In this second installment Stacy continued guiding us in once again filling out the PDF that she created for this project (you can access the pdf HERE). This is a great starting point as you gather and recall thoughts and feelings regarding the various subjects.
 

A Special Place

Ideally, you would begin by gathering 5-10 photos of the place you are wanting to document, but this process can also begin with memories of any topic.

As some of you shared, you plan to gather the photos after the fact and maybe even doing so very creatively by searching online or reaching out to family and friends with which you shared your special place.

It was exciting to see all the different possible places that hold important feelings and stories. Beautifully, these ranged from a whole country to a simple backyard.

Stacy asked as you to consider 3 things as you approach each photo and record your thoughts.

  1. Write a description of what is in each photo.

  2. Write something that someone wouldn’t know unless you told them.

  3. Write a connection you can create in your mind between the photo and maybe another person, place or moment in time that’s somehow linked to the image.
 

We then took a break from writing and Stacy led a reflection exercise by having everyone close their eyes and immersing themselves in their β€˜special place’ considering the following questions.

  • When you think of this place what is the very first image that comes to your mind?

  • Why do you think that is?

  • Do you have a photo of that image or is it something that is just captured in your mind/heart?

  • What is the image that could represent all the associations you have with this place?

  • What is of your earliest memory?

  • Who introduced this place to you?

  • How did you come to even know about it?

  • How did it become part of your story?

  • Who are the other people that you share with this place? If you were to list them, who are the people that make this place even more special?

  • Are there other key characters?

  • As you explore this place in your mind what are the little things that you love? Sights? Sounds?

  • If you were to introduce this place to someone that had never experienced it before, what would you tell them about it? Where would you take them first?

When we finished with Stacy’s exercise we took the opportunity to write all the thoughts that came to and were unlocked in our minds during the reflection period. 🩡

A Note From Stacy
 

There are so many things I love about taking a story-first approach to projects. One is that you do not have to know the format, products, decorative elements or design that you will ultimately choose. You can truly just start with the story and figure out everything else out later!

Since Saturday, I’ve decided that I will use this Close To My Heart mini albumβ€”that will hold up to 30 photosβ€”this will allow me to write about FIVE different aspects of my hometown and use multiple images to illustrate each one (see the image above). I will create section pages for each new topic by stamping with this ink directly on top of a photo. I’m not sure yet, but I think printing a local map and using it to line the inside front and back covers might be FUN!
