Story Starter

Thank YOU to everyone who joined me on Saturday for the first installment of our SUMMER 2023 project. We were able to get a great start on a STORY about someone we love.

🧑 I hope you’ll watch the replay of this session because the process of remembering is available to you and will truly enrich any story you want to tell.

Review & Questions

I’m encouraging our Live Your Story community to engage in this Story Starter practice three times this summer with the goal of remembering and documenting sensory details about a person (July), a place (August), and a thing (September).

Each month I will prepare a set of questions to ask youβ€”ANDβ€”as you quiet your mind and focus your attention, these questions will help you see, hear, touch, smell and taste very specific thingsβ€”again.

Here are the questions I used on Saturday. I generally ask a few questions and then invite myself and others to pause and write anything that comes to mind.

To begin: Think of someone you love and in your mind’s eye, picture yourself with them …

Where are you? Why?
Who else is there?
What is this person wearing?
Turn around 360 degrees and take in the space/location (describe it in your mind)
What is his/her expression?

PAUSE & WRITE

When you think of ____ what do you tend to remember first?

Is there a color you associate with them? A season or holiday?

How about a song, TV show, event, place, animal, occupation, chore, hobby, specific food?

PAUSE & WRITE

Are there specific smells (fragrance or oder)
What about sounds, accent, sayings/idioms of speech,

How would you describe their personality to someone else?

Quirky mannerisms?

Are there everyday items that you see/touch/feel that remind you of this person?

How did this person get around? Drive? Did you ever drive with them?

Where did they go? What did you talk about?

Did this person ever disappoint you? Surprise you?

PAUSE & WRITE

What did this person value, cherish, collect or keep?

Did they give you a gift or gifts?

What did they believe about other people, life, God, state/country/school or work/company.

How did they make a difference? Did they receive any awards or recognition?

How did they relax?

What stories have you been told about this person?

What do you want to remember and pass on?

Why did you love them?

🧑 I LOVE that Story Starter flips our standard β€œpicture-first” approach on its head. After you capture the specific details about a person, you’ll be able to handwrite or type short story snippets AND then find a photo to illustrate each one.

One of the memories that came up for me about my maternal grandfather, James McDougal was that his front screen door had his name on it. I remember thinking that was pretty β€œfancy!” Later in life, I learned and was told that Grandpa struggled financially most of his life, that he was in fact, quite poor. I wrote a short bit about this and thenβ€”guess whatβ€”found a photo of me as a young girl with that very door in the background!

I’m excited to keep working on my little project.

The Plan

Do something with the memories you generated during our sessionβ€”or when you watch the replayβ€”by the AUGUST Project Play Date! This is your deadline.

We’ll look forward to seeing what you do!

Sorry for the LONG email.
The replay is HERE!

p.s. This is Stacy by the way. Kiley got to go with her family to the Taylor Swift concert. She’ll be back for tonight’s Do It Together πŸ˜€ Don’t forget! 6PM Pacific.
