Navigation Pages & Lots of Words

This session of Story Coaching began with a discussion about Navigation Pages (based on questions submitted by LYS member Alissa Williams), which Stacy reviewed/introduced in this month’s Love Your Library video. These pages unify the look and feel of an album collection. Stacy is currently focused on title pages for her albums, so there were ideas for when to create the title page (anytime really!) and what photos to use (ones that represent the album’s content). There was also some discussion about Section Pages and using tabbed dividers for sections within an album.

The discussion then turned to using lots of words, and several LYS members shared ideas and examples for including more words on layouts and a variety of projects.

Ideas & Insights for Using Lots of Words

Katie Chambers shared how she begins a story with something in the present, then follows her train of thought to events in the past (most recently focusing on her childhood and teenage stories) that often then lead to another story somewhere else. She especially likes the serendipity of this story process and how it connects memories over time.

Lynda King has begun using smaller books/albums for her stories and photos and realized that she is now including more words than when she was creating 12x12 albums. She shared a journal type scrapbook with lots of pages and noted that this new format has her inspired to write more.

Joelle Bertolet shared two 12x12 layouts with photos on one page and a full page of journaling on the second. Behind that page, she included another page of journaling to continue the story and share changes that occurred after the original story. She also shared an 8x8 album about her grandmother with lots of journaling. She only had a few photos, so she scattered those throughout the album and added an index at the back of the album to describe the photos.

Heather Bogaty takes time to curate albums to include more story. She shared about the anniversary album she created for her parents’ 50th anniversary party. After everyone was able to enjoy the album, she sat down with her kids and recorded the conversation as they went through the album. The questions they asked (like who was in a photo, etc) gave Heather insight into information that needed to be added to the album. She then recorded the conversation as she went through the album with her parents, gathering information and additional stories to add to the album.

Stacy shared several formatting tips for adding lots of words to layouts:

  • Print journaling on a 4x12 strip of paper to add along the side of a layout. Typing up the story gives us a chance to edit and format before printing.

  • Use Project Life templates, many of which contain lots of room for journaling. Hit record and let the app type in your journaling, then edit as needed.

  • Include journaling on a strip of cardstock that you add a tab to and slip behind the layout.

  • Create pockets on a layout (using papers or photos) and slip journaling directly in the pocket or into an envelope that will slip into the pocket.
 

LYS Member Spotlight

Clare Johnston lives in a beautiful seaside village called Fingal Head, Northern Rivers, Australia, with her husband, their three young boys, and their cute pooch called Murphy. They have been renting a house for the past 2 or so years while they subdivide some land so they can build their Forever home.

Clare first came across Stacy through Close to My Heart and began following her on social media. Clare loved all of Stacy’s positivity (and her podcasts especially), so when Stacy announced the Live Your Story membership, Clare was super excited!  Life is very busy juggling a new and current business with her husband, working from home, and competitive sportsβ€”many things all happening at once. LYS helps her remember to slow down a little and appreciate what is happening around her.

Clare has especially loved the Wednesday Workflow meet ups, Rock Your Scroll Webinars and the Photo Freedom course as she spends quite a bit of time on her phone, generally waiting for the kids at sports/school.  She feels like she can achieve and have small wins in these areas with organizing her own Library of Memories and is hoping to improve her story and writing capabilities with her love of scrapbooking!

Clare began the first LYS seasonal project, a small Index Album for their holiday to Ayers Rock in 2019, but admits that it is still a work in progress. She has also decided to start School of Life Albums for her three boys in the Extended Story format as well as an Extended Story with stories about Family Furniture that has been passed down through generations. She has everyday reminders of Live Your Story (calendar, quote, etc) on her fridge and loves being a part of this membership.
 

Other FUN Ideas from this session

  1. Alissa Williams keeps all the pages she creates in a year together, then takes time around New Year’s to disperse them to her albums. This allows her to enjoy her layouts again and possibly see which categories and/or stories she may be missing.

  2. Liana Kearl shared a title page using a grid of square punched photos of family members. On the back of her layout, she included the names of who was in each photo.

  3. Michele Oreno saw a fun idea recently that included three blocks of wood with icons on each side that represented story prompts. (For example, a tree to represent outside, an airplane to represent vacation, etc.) These blocks can be rolled like dice to encourage storytelling!
