Tracking Ideas in Scrivener

During Play Date, LYS member Janelle Horsley shared how she uses the app Scrivener to track her ideas for stories and scrapbook layouts.

Janelle has a Binder set up in Scrivener that holds her layout ideas, information on albums and projects, and online class details and inspiration. She is diligent about adding ideas and notes into Scrivener and has developed a system that allows her to be an organized and prolific scrapbooker, story teller and member keeper.
 

Organizing Ideas in 🧑 Scrivener

Janelle created a template that she uses for tracking layout ideas. She simply copies this template into a new Note in Scrivener and records:

Layout Name: This might change as she works through the ideation process.

Inspiration: What triggered the idea.

Color Scheme: If there are colors or a color combination. Janelle notes that here.

Journal: This section generally starts out as random notes or bullet points before Janelle forms it into the journaling she’ll actually use on her layout.

Pictures: Photos she wants to use or take as well as memorabilia she might need to scan.

Elements: Janelle is primarily a digital scrapbooker, so she notes digital elements she might want to use for this layout.

Because Janelle has captured all her ideas in one place, she can easily open a Note in Scrivener and create a digital scrapbook page in small pockets of time (like while she’s watching TV or waiting in the carpool line).

Janelle categorizes her layout ideas using the twelve topics Stacy introduced in her BPC Twelve course in 2012. The topics are: Me, Holidays, Places, Everyday Life, Rituals, People, Inspiration, Personality, Things, Family Stories, Seasons, and Fun.

The ideas that Janelle shared can be used with other software and apps; in fact, some members mentioned using Trello and Evernote. Finding a way to track ideas that will allow you to access them and act on them when you’re ready is what counts.
 

LYS Member 🧑 Examples

In this example, Janelle’s notes in Scrivener are on the left and the resulting layout is on the right. Her initial inspiration came from a couple of photos of her daughter that reminded her of summertime. As she continued to think about and record ideas for this layout, her final journaling (written in the form of a letter to her daughter) records things that her daughter loves and enjoys doing.

Janelle lives in Casa Grande, Arizona, and enjoys making connections, planning/organizing, colorful stuff, learning new things, teal, making digital scrapbook pages, physical Project Life albums, and random cads to spark smiles. She picked up her first Simple Scrapbooks magazine in 2006 and has been a Stacy follower and scrapbooker ever since, even chatting with her over bottled water at a Pinner’s Conference in 2018. Now that all three of Janelle’s kids are in full-day school, she says she’s getting some mental brainpower back.

Dianna Mills lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is a Boymom of 3 young men, and is married to her high school sweetheart. She was a Clinical Psychologist before she sidestepped into running her own business/ministry facilitating groups of women and girls teaching them a journaling technique she developed called Bible Quilting. Dianna recently began adding photos to her #biblequiltjournal pages, so it’s kind of like scripture scrapbooking! She’s had Stacy’s Photo Freedom book since it first came out and just recently tiptoed back into scrapbooking.

Dianna has reclaimed scrapbooking back into her life and Trello has helped her pin all.the.ideas into one place. Although it took a while to set up the boards, she loved doing an inventory of all her past projects to validate that this type of memory keeping IS a meaningful endeavor to her. Her favorite β€œcard” in Trello is the β€œTa-da” list where she adds photos of each completed page and keeps a running tally of pages for the year.

Stacy shared a few layouts and more items she’s pulled for her Yellow Color Project and spent this session working on the August page prompt with colors from the Grab, Drop & Go challenge in the Curious & Creative video.

πŸ“² TIP: Did you know you can assign actions for double & triple taps on the iPhone? Got to Settings, Accessibility, Touch, then Back Tap to set what happens when you tap. Stacy has her double tap set to automatically open her Camera App.
