Paper Scraps & Old Calendars

  • How do you organize & store your scraps?

  • What do you do with old calendars and planners and diaries?

During Story Coaching on Monday, we discussed both of these questions in depth! There were lots of great ideas, product solutions and examples shared.
 

πŸ’‘ Ideas & Products for Storing Scraps

Clear envelopes, bags, and page protectors are perfect for holding scraps. These can be stored with your 12x12 papers, in a separate bin near your workstation, or in designated drawers or slots in your craft space.

Some examples of clear scrap holders include:

  1. 12x12 page protectors

  2. Avery 9x12 Ticket Holders

  3. Totally Tiffany Scrap Paper Organizers

  4. Creative Memories 6x12 DecoFiles

If you have the space, you might designate a set of drawers to hold scraps.

Scraps can be organized by color, manufacturer, product line, season or any other system that helps you find and use them.

You get to decide how many and which sizes of scraps to keep. Some of our members do not keep scraps smaller than 3x4 while others keep even tiny pieces for cardmaking, stamping, and punching small embellishments.
 

Scrap Storage Examples 🧑 Examples


Stacy is evolving her scrap storage from 12x12 hanging files with all size pieces to 8½” x 11” clear envelopes that will hold all the smaller pieces. She slips these envelopes on the shelf beside her color bins. Her larger scraps will remain in the larger hanging files with her full-size papers.

Heather Bogaty lives in Portland, Oregon, and enjoys looking for pocket confetti moments in every day. She cultivates opportunities to share joy and whimsy and is currently enjoying β€œsummering herself silly” decorating with garden flowers, making strawberry jam & hiking to waterfalls. Heather has followed Stacy from day one and bets she’s taken all of her classes because she loves Stacy’s unique style and Library of Memories approach.

Heather uses Avery 9”x12” Heavy Gauge clear folders and sorts her scraps by color. She especially likes these folders because they have a hole at the top, which she uses to β€œStacy-ize” them by adding a cute ribbon.
 

Processing Old Calendars 🧑 Planners & Diaries

Stacy suggests removing chronology when processing a pile of old calendars and planners. First, look through several of these items to get an idea of what’s there; then take time to go through them with the goal of tracking similar or recurring themes.

Use the tracking data to create an album or book with a look at each month through the years. For example, the September section could include photos from back-to-school, sports events, Labor Day, and family birthdays through the years. This project could encompass monthly highlights for a decade (or other time period). Stacy has an album (not finished yet) that she calls her album Project Lifetime, because it will encompass a broad look at each month over decades!

Choose a few special pages to scan and share with other family members.

Along with tracking the big events, be sure to track everyday life things. Was there a recurring hair appointment every year before the holidays? Did you consistently add the grocery list in the margins of the wall calendar? How many soccer games did y’all attend over the years?

Add a pocket page to a scrapbook layout to preserve a few special pages or smaller calendars.

  1. Use a five-year journal to track highlights as you sort through all those wall calendars, Franklin planners, diaries, and pocket calendars. Or create a spreadsheet to make the data searchable.

  2. Create a β€œDid You Know?” layout with information you learned mining these yearly materials.

🧑 Seasonal Project Coming Up!

During this session, Stacy also shared briefly about the items she’s gathering and preparing for this Season's Life in Color Project. As she’s gathered photos and memorabilia, she’s discovered that she’ll be able to tell a lot of her life story through the lens of her favorite color, yellow.

A NOTE from 🧑 Stacy …

I received the most delightful email yesterday from member, Clare, which I will reply to tomorrow πŸ˜‰.

Clare shared some of the activities and events happening all around her during a very busy season with 3 young boys. She mentions that it was her birthday this week and that she had a wonderful day! She writes, β€œGot the most awesome pictures (unexpectedly) by the beach with my husband and my eldest boy Riley. Water was in the back of my mind thanks to you and the Look and See Inspo.”

She also writes, β€œSo much life to cram in right now but your Membership gives me some focus to have some β€œMe” Time to centre myself on the things I love to learn and enjoy in your likeminded community. Your 15-mins a day is what I try to focus on in the busyness of my days – such great advice.”

I absolutely ❀️ LOVE how Clare views Live Your Story as self-care. It is you knowβ€”exactly that! This space that we’re creating together is what we all need in the small moments, between the busy things, so that we are reminded to pause and take it all in, while it is still right here.

Yesterday at 2:30PM I said to Addie, β€œGet in the car, we’re going downtown!”
”For what?” Asked Addie
”To take pictures of you and me and some urban art!”
